This Summer, The 100 Gates Project and New Harlem East Merchant Association (NHEMA) have teamed up to bring local artists together with local merchants, beautifying gates in East Harlem. The project (which also includes Staten Island), is part of the New York City Department of Small Business Service’s Neighborhood 360 grant opportunity program.
Check out some of the gates currently being painted.
Madison Ave Hair Studio, Artist Matt Samuelson #smartink
First gate painted, Madison Avenue Hair Studio by artist Matt Samuelson, #smartink. This project is located at 1960 Madison Avenue, just north of 125th Street. You might recognize the artists name from his recent work on East Harlem’s Guerrilla Wall.
Charlie’s Place, Artist Tiara Zhane
Located directly across the street from Madison Avenue Hair Salon, is gate #2, Charlie’s Place Sushi Restaurant, with artist Tiara Zhane creating a Koi pond. Charlie’s Place is located at 1960 Madison Avenue, just north of 125th Street.
Wild Olive Market, Artist Adam Negron
The third gate in the project is Wild Olive Market, located at 10 East 125th Street (just east of Fifth Avenue), by artist Adam Negron. With extended hours, you better get there before 7am or after 10pm to see this colorful veggie/fruit gate combo.
El Barrio Wireless, Artist Ralph Serrano #ARTeoMuerte
Fourth gate is El Barrio Wireless located at 232 East 116th Street, Artist Ralph Serrano #ARTeoMuerte
South East Corner of Park Avenue and 125th Street, Artist Gera Lozano
The South East corner of Park Avenue and 125th Street was a very busy place on this very rainy day. Beside the 100 Gates Project, which began today by Artist, Gera Lozano #GeraLuz, on the corner gates, it appears a film crew was busy shooting The Plaza and surrounding area. Could it be that the Design Trust Winner, Uptown Grand Central (NHEMA) is getting more attention? #Geraluz continues tomorrow.
238 East 116th Street, Artist Lucine Yeghiazaryan
Lucine Yeghiazaryan giving 116th Street the feel of far-away places at Mexico Travel.
There will be many more gates added to this list over the Summer. We will continue to update. Stay tuned.
In addition to the East Harlem 100 Gates Project, NHEMA has a lot more going on from Fresh Food Boxes each week, to Zumba, at The Plaza – 125th Street and Park Avenue beginning at 3 pm.
