BRIC, a leading arts and media institution, is pleased to announce its 33rd annual student exhibition, Re: generation, celebrating the creativity of K-12 graders who represent a network of over 2,000 students across 43 schools and three community centers around Brooklyn. With the return of students to full-time, in-person learning for New York City Public Schools in September 2021, the need for community re-building was necessary more than ever. With the support of BRIC’s Youth Education residency programs and its 30 teaching artists and professional educators, classrooms in participating schools became spaces in which students could reconnect and express themselves through visual arts and media. On view from May 19 to June 12, 2022, with an opening reception May 21, the exhibition explores topics of identity, activism, current events, mental health, community, and the characteristics that shape one’s personal and communal identities.
The works presented in Re: generation were created by students under uncertain and challenging circumstances, embracing the arts as an outlet for expression and healing. The participating students work with a variety of mediums including mosaic, mixed media, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, podcasting, animation, and filmmaking. The hard efforts of both educators and students culminate through the exhibition as a celebration of artistic expression and community re-building.
For 33 years BRIC has supported community-based arts education, bringing professional contemporary artists into the classroom. BRIC’s Contemporary Art Education residency introduces students to new artistic methods and concepts, developing widespread community access to arts education.
On view in conjunction with the annual student exhibition is BRIC’s Youth Curatorial Fellowship Exhibition, I’m Walking ‘Ere. Curated by BRIC’s 3rd Annual Youth Curatorial Fellows through an open call process, the exhibition explores how New York teenagers, of all identities, express themselves amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. I’m Walking ‘Ere will be on view in the project room from May 19 to June 12, 2022.

Public Events~ Family Day 2022, Saturday, May 21, 11am -2pm ~ BRIC Teaching Artists will lead a day full of art activities such as exhibition tours, a scavenger hunt, and hands-on activities: digital animation, screenprinting, wearables, and more!
