David Zwirner is pleased to present new large-scale paintings and sculptures by Dana Schutz at 525 and 533 West 19th Street in New York. This will be Schutz’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and will coincide with a major survey of the artist’s work, on view from October 2023 to February 2024, at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, where it traveled from the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark.

David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of work from the 1940s by Ad Reinhardt (1913–1967) at the gallery’s East 69th Street location in New York. Organized in collaboration with the Ad Reinhardt Foundation, this will be the third solo exhibition of Reinhardt’s work at David Zwirner, following major presentations of his black paintings in 2013 and his blue paintings in 2017. On view November 1, 2023 through January 27, 2024.

Robert Ryman: 1961~1964 to Open at David Zwirner in November

David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of early paintings by Robert Ryman (1930–2019) at the gallery’s 537 West 20th Street location in New York. Curated by Dieter Schwarz and organized in collaboration with the artist’s family, the exhibition will focus on the years 1961–1964. Composed primarily of significant loans from museums and private collections in the United States and Europe, this will be one of the most extensive looks at this formative moment in Ryman’s career. The exhibition will be on view November 9th.

One of the most celebrated contemporary artists of our time, Yayoi Kusama will unveil her latest works on May 11 in her largest gallery exhibition to date, spanning David Zwirner Galleries West 19th and West 20th Street in New York City.

The exhibition will feature new paintings, new sculptures elaborating on her signature motifs of pumpkins and flowers, and a new Infinity Mirrored Room.

Works by Gerhard Richter to Open at David Zwirner

David Zwirner is pleased to present the gallery’s first exhibition of works by Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) since the announcement of his representation in December 2022. Held at the gallery’s location at 537 West 20th Street in New York, the exhibition will feature new and recent abstract works by Richter, all created between 2016 and 2022. This will be the first exhibition devoted to the artist’s work in New York since his retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was only briefly on view in March 2020.

David Zwirner is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Dan Flavin at the gallery’s 34 East 69th Street location in New York. Presented in adjacent rooms of the Upper East Side townhouse, the works on view recreate two groundbreaking exhibitions that Flavin mounted in 1967 at New York’s Kornblee Gallery, then located at the nearby and architecturally similar 58 East 79th Street. The exhibition will offer viewers a rare opportunity to experience the artist’s early installations as he would have presented them.

David Zwirner is pleased to announce Five Paintings, a selection of exceptional works by the late painter Frank Moore (1953–2002) drawn from an important private European collection. For this exhibition, five paintings and four works on paper will be on view at the 34 East 69th Street gallery. Made in the artist’s downtown New York studio and in his upstate home in Deposit, New York, these jewel-like pictures are among the best known that Moore created in his brief lifetime and among the most documented—portraying entire ecosystems within their inventive frames, which serve to extend the artwork’s confines beyond the support.

Organized by both galleries to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the artist’s momentous 1972 posthumous retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Cataclysm re-creates the iconic exhibition’s checklist of 113 photographs, underscoring the subversive poignancy of Arbus’s work even today while highlighting the popular and critical upheaval the original exhibition precipitated.

David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of work by the Spanish artist Juan Muñoz curated by Vicente Todolí. Spanning two floors of the gallery’s 537 West 20th Street location in New York, the presentation will feature seven discrete installations from throughout Muñoz’s career that highlight his expansive notion of sculpture. Wide-ranging in scale and format, each installation provides viewers with a distinct experience. This will be the gallery’s first exhibition of the artist’s work since announcing the representation of the Juan Muñoz Estate in 2020.

Hilton Als Curates ‘Toni Morrison’s Black Book’ at David Zwirner Gallery

David Zwirner is pleased to announce a group exhibition curated by the Pulitzer Prize–winning author, critic, and curator Hilton Als. On view at the gallery’s West 19th Street spaces, the exhibition will focus on the enormous output and cultural significance of Toni Morrison (1931–2019), and, as Als notes, “will add visual components that italicize the beauty and audacity of her work.” Included will be selected archival materials as well as work by artists Garrett Bradley, Beverly Buchanan, Robert Gober, Gwen Knight, Kerry James Marshall, Julie Mehretu, Irving Penn, Walter Price, Martin Puryear, Amy Sillman, Bob Thompson, and James Van Der Zee, among others, some of which have been commissioned for the exhibition and were made in direct response to Morrison’s writings.

‘Tree of Knowledge’ ~ Hilma af Klint will be on view at David Zwirner Gallery

David Zwirner is pleased to present Tree of Knowledge, an exhibition of a rare set of Hilma af Klint’s groundbreaking 1913–1915 series of works on paper of the same title, on view at the gallery’s 34 East 69th Street location in New York. This recently discovered group of eight watercolors is among the few works by the artist to exist outside of the holdings of the Hilma af Klint Foundation. This will be a singular opportunity for New York audiences to experience the artist’s revelatory work, and follows the highly acclaimed 2018–2019 exhibition Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future, held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

David Zwirner to open 52 Walker in Tribeca

 

 

 

52 Walker, the new David Zwirner gallery space programmed and led by Director Ebony L. Haynes, will open October 2021, with a solo presentation of work by Kandis Williams, on view through December 2021. The gallery takes its name from its location at 52 Walker Street in Tribeca. The gallery will occupy the first floor of the five-story landmark building, which was formerly the home of M1-5 Lounge. Selldorf Architects is designing the renovation of the space.

David Zwirner will open its doors to an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Alice Neel (1900–1984) from the first decades of the artist’s influential career. On view at the gallery’s 537 West 20th Street location, the focused presentation centers on works from the 1930s through the 1950s, and includes interiors, memory paintings, New York City streetscapes, and portraits of family and others close to Neel. At turns atmospheric, somber, and deeply personal, these works offer a chronological account of this significant period of Neel’s life and work, and engage themes of interiority, intimacy, and the negotiation between private and public, which continue to resonate in our present moment.

More Life is a series of curated solo exhibitions held at the gallery’s locations in New York and London this summer and fall.
