Beginning November 10 and continuing until December 31, 2021, Salmagundi presents Small & Mighty: Newly Conserved Thumb-Box, in the Grand Stair Gallery of its historic 1853 townhouse at 47 Fifth Avenue. The exhibition marks the first time the organization’s permanent art collection of over fifty thumb-box paintings will be on display as a group. The exhibition is arranged by era and affords the viewer a chance to see 20th-century American art history at a glance.

Beginning November 1st, a milestone commission will be viewable by the public at historic arts organization Salmagundi. The commission consists of two dynamic allegorical door panels by Salmagundi artist Noah Buchanan of Santa Cruz, California. Following a competition of thirty-one artists from across the country and Mexico, the commission was awarded to Buchanan for his Light and Visual Perception for the left side door and Intelligence and Education for the right side door.

Vito Schnabel Gallery is pleased to announce Ron Gorchov: Spice of Life, an exhibition that pays tribute to the revolutionary work of the late American painter acclaimed for shaped canvases that uniquely merged the grandeur of Abstract Expressionism, formal conceits of Minimalist sculpture, and subversive wit of the 1970s, arriving at an enigmatic and wholly new form of abstraction.

Opening September 14, Spice of Life will be on view through October 30 at the gallery’s 455 West 19th Street location. The exhibition features a selection of exceptional paintings made by Gorchov across the course of his fifty-year career, from the 1970s to the late 2010s.

Greenwich Village’s rich history of creativity and activism will drive dozens of events throughout the iconic neighborhood, from September 18 through September 26. Seven-time-Grammy-nominee Bobby Sanabria and his Multiverse Big Band will bring Latin Jazz to a free concert in Washington Square Park on Sept. 25, while the folk revival will return to the Bitter End on Sept. 26, and classical compositions by Village residents Harold Meltzer and David Del Tredici will fill the sanctuary of St. John’s in the Village on Sept. 23 and Sept. 24. Literary tours, poetry readings, theater crawls, a program of Village-themed films, open design studios, children’s book readings, and many other activities will offer Village residents, New Yorkers, and tourists opportunities to discover what makes Greenwich Village such a vital place.

Cherry Lane Theatre in the West Village Sold to Indie Film & TV Company, A24 for $10 Million

After a failed attempt to sell the historic theatre to Lucille Lortel Theater Foundation in 2021, the Cherry Lane Theatre has been sold to the independent film and tv company, A24. According to IndieWire, A24 will keep the integrity of the theatre as opposed to using it for film screenings.

On March 23, 2021, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) held a virtual public hearing on the proposed designation of 70 Fifth Avenue, known as the Educational Building, in Greenwich Village. In a meeting on May 18, 2021, a final vote was taken with all in favor, designating 70 Fifth Avenue as a NYC Landmark.

Beginning March 25, 2021, Vito Schnabel Gallery will present Man Ray & Picabia, a historical exhibition that brings into dialogue seminal works by two early modern masters and legendary artists of the avant-garde. An intimate presentation, the exhibition focuses on only nine paintings that span the late 1920s to the mid-1950s – a careful selection designed to invite contemplation on the nature of artistic revolution. The canvases on view manifest Man Ray and Francis Picabia’s prodigious engagement with the medium of painting across multi-faceted careers marked by irreverence toward convention and an ability to cycle through the phases of modernism to arrive at exceptionally original results. This rare grouping includes paintings that have not been on display to the public for decades.

Man Ray & Picabia will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue featuring an essay by writer and Man Ray specialist Timothy Baum.

Remains of Early New Yorkers Reinterred from Washington Square Park

NYC Parks reinterred the fragmentary remains of early New Yorkers found during construction in and around Washington Square Park this past March, 2021.. Green-Wood Cemetery volunteered their services for excavation, which was overseen by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission’s Director of Archaeology. The human remains were placed in a wooden box and buried five feet below grade within a planting bed in the park. An engraved paver marks the site, near the Sullivan Street and Washington Square Park South entrance.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Edith O’Hara, founder of the 13th St. Repertory Theatre, in October, 2020 at the age of 103. We have also been alerted by Village Preservation to the urgency in asking NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission to consider landmark designation for the 3 1/2 story, 170 year-old row house located at 50 West 13th Street.

Revisiting 9/11 Tiles for America ~ A Memorial in Greenwich Village

September 11, 2001 will be indelibly imprinted in our minds. Overwhelmed with a sense of sadness, New Yorkers came together in many different ways ~ in cleanup, in prayer, and in art. On September 12th, pictures of lost loved-ones were hung on a chain linked fence in Greenwich Village, with the hope that they would be found. Along-side these pictures were ceramics shaped angels, handprinted with patriotic symbols. Over the next weeks and months, the ceramic tiles on the fence grew ~ and eventually they were saved and placed permanently in a small triangular park in Greenwich Village.

Once a year, the Salmagundi Club hosts a Fall Auction as a fundraiser to benefit this historic nonprofit organization. Art Collectors since the early 1900s have attended SCNY Auctions for the opportunity to purchase quality art work by living artists. Housed in a brownstone on Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village, the Club’s doors are open and free to the public six-days a week. The artwork will go on view September 21st, with the Auction to be held on October 16, 2020.

In the summer of 2003, the Norman Rockwell Museum at Stockbridge, Massachusetts opened its doors to an exhibition of Rockwell’s works produced during the time the artist lived in Arlington, Vermont. Among the works was the painting entitled, Breaking Home Ties. But standing before it, the artist and museum patron, John Howard Sanden had an overwhelming feeling that this was not at all the original ~ it was a reproduction (a fake!)

With New York City real estate at such a premium, it is hard to image how short a life the single-story structure has these days. And even harder to imagine how many still exist throughout our five boroughs.

In 2015, photographer and long-time East Village resident Adam Friedberg decided to explore all the single-story buildings in the East Village and the Lower East Side. To date, he has documented in photographs nearly 100 sites. Many of these images are now on view in his exhibition, Single-Story Project, at the Center for Architecture. Vito Schnabel Projects will open its doors to Gus Van Sant: Recent Paintings, Hollywood Boulevard, an exhibition of new works by Los Angeles-based artist and auteur, Gus Van Sant (b. 1952, Louisville, Kentucky). On view will be a series of large-scale watercolors on stretched linen that collapse dreamlike impressions of urban Los Angeles with special narratives inspired by the people and events Van Sant has observed since establishing his home in the city in the 1970s. Recent Paintings: Hollywood Boulevard is Van Sant’s first solo paintings exhibition in New York.

Celebrating World Pride 2019 & Stonewall 50

June 28th marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in 1969, when the New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, leading to protests and violent clashes outside the Christopher Street establishment ~ and the beginning of the gay rights movement. Celebrating Stonewall 50, beginning in March, and leading up to the World Pride NYC March: Stonewall 50 in June, here are a few suggestions. We will continue to add events as the year progresses.
