Hart Island Free Public Tours Now Offered by NYC Parks Department’s Urban Park Rangers

Today, NYC Parks announced the start of free public tours of Hart Island, the City’s public cemetery, in an effort to increase access to the island, reduce historical stigmas surrounding itspast, and educate the public about its role as an important piece of City infrastructure.

Beginning on November 21, 2023, NYC Parks’ Urban Park Rangers will offer free walking tours of the island twice per month. Registration is required through an online form and participants will be selected by lottery. All public history tours are done on foot and last approximately 2.5 hours, with ferry transportation provided to and from Hart Island.

Flatiron NoMad Partnership Holds Free Memorial Day Weekend Walking Tour ‘From Decoration Day to Memorial Day’

This Memorial Day weekend, the Flatiron NoMad Partnership will host a free Memorial Day-themed historic walking tour on Sunday, May 28. The tour, “From Decoration Day to Memorial Day,” led by historian and author Miriam Berman, will give visitors an insight into the history of Memorial Day in the Flatiron NoMad District.

Dust off your sneakers and get ready for the annual Jane’s Walk, which will be held on May 5-7. Organized by the Municipal Art Society of New York, it is the largest chapter of the festival anywhere in the world, with more than 165 in-person, virtual, and on-demand walks in all five boroughs.

The Flatiron NoMad Partnership, which provides free, year-round historic walking tours of the neighborhood, will offer special holiday-themed walking tours on three Sundays in December.

Attendees will learn about the Star of Hope, the country’s first public Christmas tree lighting, the international toy and gift center, and Dr. Clement Clarke Moore writing his famous Christmas poem, “A Visit From St. Nicholas” (commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas”) in his country home on 23rd Street in 1822.

Free Historic Walking Tours of NYC’s Flatiron District

Another sign that New York has thrown open its doors to ‘Back to Normal‘ is the news that The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership’s Historic Flatiron Walking Tours will return to an in-person format on Sunday, July 18, 2021, at 11:00 AM for the first time since the COVID pandemic began. Following a year of virtual tours, the Partnership’s professional guides will return to the streets, leading groups on a fascinating stroll through the historic and vibrant Flatiron District. The tours are FREE and will take place every Sunday morning at 11:00 AM, rain or shine, year-round. No advance registration is required.
