The Blessing of the Animals, St. John the Divine, October, 2017

This is the first time the procession of animals has taken place since 2018 due to the fire in 2019, followed by the pandemic. We were sorry to hear that the animal rescue agency that brought the ‘exotic’ animals to the Cathedral did not survive the pandemic.

This year, the Cathedral will be drawing on the services of an agency that secures animals mostly for theatrical purposes, like Broadway and films. “The people who care for the animals do it as much as an act of love as a means of income. The animals are consistently well cared for, and they are trained to live and thrive in the presence of large groups of people. They are, in a sense professional actors.” Since these animals come at a cost, the Cathedral hopes attendees will be generous with their giving during this celebration.

In addition, there will be animals who work for the good of society, like the NYPD mounted police horses.
