The Cheryl Hazan Gallery will open its doors to Looking Up, a solo exhibition of Uruguayan artist Sebastian Mederos. In this exhibition, Sebastian Mederos opens up a terrain where seemingly distant dimensions intertwine in an intimate narrative.

In Looking Up, we are embraced by the density of acrylic. As an ode to the wild, Uruguayan trees and forests explode and drip on the canvas. The forms appear surpassed and cannot retain the forces of nature. Viewed from below, as reverencing the magnificence of the unknown, these paintings evoke the trees that served as a sacred refuge upon Sebastian’s return to Uruguay after living in New York for 10 years.

Breaking through the profound forests we are met with eccentric characters. These are the Portraits of New Yorkers, with their distinctive fashionable and cosmopolitan airs. Sebastian honors his years living in the Big Apple by portraying the most vivid and loyal manifestation of the city: its people. Magnified against a white background, the monochromatic pencil drawings evoke the eclectic, seductive-and sometimes neurotic- enchantment of New York characters. In this way, the exhibition space becomes a field traversed by two forces the reveal their particular beauty and relate in a poetic tension; journeying from the deep forests to the city streets, from the intimate to the collective, and celebrating the core forces that nourish Sebastian’s creative process.

Mederos shares the thoughts of Peter Dolg: “I never really understood what was so conceptual about conceptual art, anyway – all painting, pretty much is conceptual. I mean, every painting is an idea. Every painting is a result of a process”
