The historic La Marqueta open-air events and retail space located under the Park Avenue viaduct at 115th Street will be getting a well-needed makeover.

The Economic Development Corporation (EDC), Friends of La Marqueta (FOLM), the Vendor Association, and Market Partners will team up and put forth a plan for the multi-million dollar renovation project which will keep the integrity and cultural heritage of the space.

The La Marqueta redevelopment includes eight lots, 10,000 square-feet each. The current plan could include Event Space in Lot 1 ~ well-needed Incubator Parking in Lot 2 ~ the Incubator Center in Lot 3 ~ Public Retail Market and the Hot Bread Kitchen in Lot 4 ~ La Placita in Lot 5 ~ Urban Garden Center in Lot 6 and 7 ~ and Parking in Lot 8.

The conceptual plan would relocate Urban Garden Center from Lot 6 to Lot 1, offering more floor-to-ceiling clearance, largely outdoor space, with some partially-indoor areas for the nursery and a cafe with seating!

The renovations to LaPlacita started in June 2018 and include exterior recladding, new stairways and railings, new restrooms, overhead radiant heaters, a new concession stand, retractable bleachers and stage, and improved lighting and entrances.

Lots 3 and 4 will be retrofitted to accommodate production kitchens and small vendor booths with adjoining seating areas. The kitchens will continue to incubate emerging businesses in El Barrio. Lot 6 will house a new public market and offer fresh produce, grocery items, prepared foods, and public seating in a food hall environment. Local vendors and restaurateurs will be featured side by side along a continuous counter. Lot 7 is set to host public outdoor weekend farmers’ markets.

Just in time for Halloween, 2019, La Marqueta, Diana Ayala, and NYC EDC are hosting a Halloween Party in the beautiful new La Placita (below) at 116th Street and Park Avenue on Thursday, October 31st from 4:30 to 7:00pm.

Here’s where the project is as of October 2019.
