The three women artists featured in Present in the Modern World, Ingrid Capozzoli Flinn, Alison Causer, and Donnelly Marks share a modern sensibility in their art practices. Their works reference periods in time from Byzantine to the present.

They collectively have blurred the lines between traditional, modern, and contemporary. Causer and Capozzoli Flinn’s brush strokes take classic oil paintings into the present and exhibited alongside Marks’ sculptures that reference brutalist structures create an exhibition that is timeless but of the modern world.

The term modern generally refers to the mid 20th century but it is frequently used/misused to describe contemporary art and objects of design. It is within this context that the exhibition places the work of three contemporary artists in dialogue, opening a conversation about the art movements that have informed them and influenced all our preferences in artistic styles.

Donnelly Marks is a visual artist, photographer, and sculptor. Her practice uniquely shifts between mediums.  Marks sculptures are assemblages crafted with raw often brut materials discovered in her daily life.  Her photographs are of ordinary things that are barely recognizable when constructed and stylized in her still life images. Her process starts with a spontaneous connection to the material. The sculptures are initially built quickly but then evolve through an ongoing exploration of the structure over time – one idea intuitively leading to another.
