From public art installations to live performances and fresh lemonade, New Yorkers and visitors will be able to experience a diverse mix of free community programs in the heart of Midtown Manhattan in the Garment District this summer, as the Garment District Alliance (GDA) unveils its Summer on Broadway lineup for 2023.

The fabulous summer festivities will take place on Broadway between 39thand 40th Street from 12 – 2PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

“We are thrilled to present an exciting lineup of programming that will truly celebrate our local community and contribute to the Garment District’s vibrant, welcoming environment this summer,” said Barbara A. Blair, president of the Garment District Alliance. “We are grateful to our partners for collaborating with us to introduce Summer on Broadway, and we encourage everyone to enjoy these enriching experiences each week.”

As part of Summer on Broadway, GDA will present a series of free weekly festivities on Broadway between 39thand 40th Street from 12 – 2PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The programming will feature:

  • Broadway Rhythm: On Wednesdays from May 31 – September 27, diverse musical artists from MTA Music Under New York will perform a variety of genres, ranging from bluegrass to jazz, classic rock, pop and more.
  • Broadway Squeeze: On Thursdays from July 6 – August 31, pedestrians can cool down with free Renegade Lemonade at the Broadway Squeeze stand.
  • Broadway Stage: Every Tuesday from July 11 – August 29, the community can enjoy performances in music, dance and experimental theater presented by The Tank, a champion of artists in pursuit of new ideas and forms of expression.
  • Broadway Public Art: An endearing bronze sculpture created by artist Joy Brown, titled Kneeler, is welcoming New Yorkers and visitors to the Garment District through August. The sculpture has a universal spirit of harmony and optimism, which transcends culture, gender, and age, evoking. feelings of calm amidst the dynamic cityscape. GDA unveiled Kneeler in April, and recently welcomed two additional sculptures in June, Animal with Rider and Two Together, with the installation now titled Kneeler and Friends.

Summer on Broadway is presented by GDA in partnership with the New York City Department of Transportation’s Art Program, MTA Music Under New York, and The Tank.

The Garment District is home to diverse business sectors from technology to hospitality and includes thousands of people working in the creative economy, including fine and performing artists, designers, architects, photographers, and more than a hundred theaters, galleries, performance spaces, and studios.
