Artists on Artists, Studio Museum in Harlem Celebrates the Historic Smokehouse Associates ~ August 5, 2023

The Studio Museum in Harlem presents the culminating event in celebration of the Smokehouse Associates publication.

Join The Studio Museum in Harlem in Harlem Art Park, the site of one of the Smokehouse Associates’ first painted walls, for a multimedia program featuring sonia louise davis, David L. Johnson, and Shamel Pitts. Through participatory activities and insightful conversation, visitors will be guided through reflections on Smokehouse’s collaborative work and will explore their own connections to—and interpretations of—the collective’s ethos to “let the message be the change.”

Sotheby’s + Studio Museum in Harlem = Creating Space ~ Auction off to a Great Start!

Creating Space: Artists for The Studio Museum in Harlem: An Auction to Benefit the Museum’s New Building  took place on May 16 and 17 at Sotheby’s New York, with a public viewing of the works during the month of May, up to auction date. The Museum hopes to raise $175 million during its capital campaign.

At auction, all five additional donated pieces sold above their high estimates, raising $16.4 million. 37 more pieces were sold Thursday evening, raising $20.2 million ~ and yielding 24 artist records.

The Studio Museum in Harlem Shares New Design by Adjaye Associates

The Studio Museum in Harlem completed site preparation, and began foundation work in January, 2022 on the its anticipated 82,000 square foot building, located at the current Museum site at 144 West 125th Street. The new building, designed by Adjaye Associates in collaboration with Cooper Robertson, will replace its century-old commercial building that they have occupied since the early 1980s.

The design is also one of the winners of the 36th Annual Awards for Excellence in Design, announced by Mayor de Blasio on May 23, 2018.
