White Cube is pleased to present ‘Hold Me, Hold Me, Hold Me’ by Theaster Gates, the artist’s first solo exhibition at White Cube New York, located at 1002 Madison Avenue.

The title of the exhibition honours the 1970s duet ‘Be Real Black For Me’ by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack. Drawing from the echoed repetition of the phrase ‘hold me’ midway through the song, Gates explores the connections between music, composition, and the complex interactions between artistry and mental health, acknowledging the truth of Hathaway’s own profound struggles with fame and creative transmission during his lifetime.

‘Theaster Gates: Young Lords and Their Traces’ to Open at New Museum

 

 

 

Opening November 10, 2022, the New Museum will present the first American museum survey exhibition devoted to Theaster Gates, encompassing the full range of the artist’s practice across a variety of media creating communal spaces for preservation, remembrance, and exchange. This landmark exhibition will be accompanied by a presentation of newly commissioned works by Vivian CaccuriandMiles Greenberg exploring the relationship between bodies and sound waves.

The Studio Museum in Harlem Shares New Design by Adjaye Associates

The Studio Museum in Harlem completed site preparation, and began foundation work in January, 2022 on the its anticipated 82,000 square foot building, located at the current Museum site at 144 West 125th Street. The new building, designed by Adjaye Associates in collaboration with Cooper Robertson, will replace its century-old commercial building that they have occupied since the early 1980s.

The design is also one of the winners of the 36th Annual Awards for Excellence in Design, announced by Mayor de Blasio on May 23, 2018.
