Past Editions have brought more than thirty top architectural and engineering firms together, grouped in teams, for a marathon, over-night ‘Canstruction Competition’ on the two floors of Brookfield Place.

The teams are mentored by design professionals, working with them from 8-12 weeks on designs to create structures that can be built in a single night. Working all night, each team creates an architectural masterpiece made of unopened food cans to vie for such titles as ‘Best Original Design’; ‘Best Use of Labels’; ‘Best Meal’; ‘Most Cans’ and more ~ with the People’s Choice Award, where the public chimes in on a favorite.

Following the exhibitions, the structures are deconstructed and the cans are donated to City Harvest. This Event is the largest annual donation of canned food from a single event to City Harvest.

Canstruction was founded in 1992 by the Society for Design Administration New York Chapter.  Now, New York City is joined by over 150 cities across North America and other countries who will hold Canstruction Competitions in the coming year. In the end, the event not only raises public awareness, but collects millions of pounds of food for local food banks. In New York, City Harvest is the recipient. All donations go directly to City Harvest and are tax deductible.
