A prestigious roster of over 60 internationally acclaimed galleries will open their doors for tours and discussions of their current exhibitions during the Madison Avenue Spring Gallery Walk 2022 on May 14. The event, held in association with ARTnews, is timed to celebrate Madison Avenue Art & Design Weekend and Frieze Week. It encompasses many of the foremost galleries located on Madison Avenue between 57th and 86th streets and the adjoining side streets.
Participating galleries include: Acquavella Galleries, Arader Gallery, Cheim & Read, David Zwirner Gallery, Dickinson Gallery, Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art, Gagosian Shop, Hauser & Worth, Leila Heller Galleries, Hirschl & Adler, Hubert Gallery, Ippodo Gallery, Jennifer Baahng Gallery, Mnuchin Gallery, Opera Gallery, Robilant+Voena, Rosenberg & Co., Skarstedt Gallery, Thomsen Gallery, Van de Weghe and Van Loren Waxter.
A favorite community event during the Spring Gallery Walk is Frick Madison’s invitation to the public to sketch with them outdoors in front of the museum on Madison Avenue at 75th Street. Drawing easels will be available on a first-come, first-served basis (weather permitting). This event is free. All materials will be provided, and no are background is needed. Visits to the roster of 65 participating Madison Avenue galleries offer the opportunity to discover, learn and have access to view current collections, meet the artists, and attend a wide range of talks and tours.
Just a little about the stunning triple chair pictured above ~ The Yoshino area in Nara prefecture is a land of cultivated cypress and cedar forests. Rich with over 500 years of history is over 500 decades; the woods are filled with trees as old as 300 years. The climate there is warm, mild, and humid, producing lumber suitable for carving. The trees grow straight, gentle, and soft yet rigid. It’s impressive to see these trees grow neatly to create the steep mountain forests. Tokunaga combines the beautiful rich cedar and strong zelkova to make this harmonious vibrato chair.
Among the highlights:
“Unnatural Nature: Post-Post-Pop Landscapes” curated by Todd Bradway at Acquavella. David Zwirner will
present a selection of works by the American artist Fred Sandback with a welcoming talk on the exhibition. “The Lure of the West” at the Gerald Peters Gallery reveals both historic and contemporary depictions of the landscape, animals and people with a gallery talk on this subject for Eurocentric and post war artists.
Hauser & Wirth will offer a Director-led walkthrough of over 100 works from Cindy Sherman’s most groundbreaking and influential early series – including the complete set of 70 Untitled Film Stills, Rear Screen Projections and Centerfolds – in her first major solo exhibition with the gallery.
In the image above, artist Bon Jung Kim utilizes computer parts in his work as symbolic objects for internet addiction in the exhibition Convalescence at Kate Oh Gallery.
Hirschl & Adler will present “Lily Cox-Richard: Soft Fists Insist.” This exhibition is a complement to the artist’s current solo exhibition on view at MASS MoCA. Helwaser Gallery debuts recent works and figurative paintings in a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Adam Handler along with a curator’s tour. “Already and Not Yet” on view at the Jennifer Baahng Gallery showcases Eric Brown’s mark-making paintings, and the LEGO sculptural paintings by Jaye Moon. Artists Eric Brown and Jaye Moon will be available to walk guests through the exhibition.
At Kapoor Galleries, Sanjay Kapoor will lead a tour of “Dhanvantari’s Blessing,” consisting of the aforementioned highlights along with many fine Indian miniature paintings and arms as well as a carefully curated selection of sculptures from India, Nepal, and Tibet.
The Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery will feature “Éhagaki: Solo Exhibition” by Emi Anraukuji. Award-winning Japanese photographer Emi Anraukuji is best known for her intimate and elusive self-portraits blended with surrealistic atmospheres and owner/director Miyako Yoshinaga will walk you through the exhibition.
“Robert Rauschenberg: Exceptional Works, 1971-199” can be viewed at Mnuchin Gallery. Out Left Art gallery curator, Lumane Luma, will provide a tour of the exhibition “Becoming: The Cultivation of Identity through Migration.” Rosenberg & Co. offers a solo exhibition of works by Marguerite Louppe with a guide tour at appointed times, and Opera Gallery New York will present a solo exhibition of works by French artist Pierre Soulages. “Worlds Warning Lights On,” at Rubin & Chapelle is a solo exhibition by the artist, Mia Enell, who will join the curator Alaina Claire in a gallery conversation.
“Chaunticlere, paintings from the 80’s” at Upsilon Gallery focuses on a particular period of the artist and educator Clyde Hopkins with a gallery talk discussion on his practice. Organized by the Madison Avenue B.I.D., in association with ARTnews, the Madison Avenue Spring Gallery Walk is free and open to the public.
