The New York Historical Society to House The American LGBTQ+ Museum and Expansion of Democracy Wing

The New York Historical Society will be adding more than 70,000 square-feet to its historic building along Central Park’s Upper West Side. This five-story addition will include  additional classrooms, galleries, study areas ~ and the the first museum in New York dedicated to LGBTQ+ history and culture, with an anticipated completion date near 2026.

The American LGBTQ+ Museum will be located within a 4,000 square foot gallery space and occupy a full floor. Exciting programming to include rotating exhibitions and a ‘virtual museum’ in addition to its permanent exhibitions.

In a mission statement on its site,

“The American LGBTQ+ Museum preserves, investigates, and celebrates the dynamic histories and cultures of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people, as well as those of the emergent and adjacent identities among our communities. Using exhibitions and programs, we seek to advance LGBTQ+ equality through the lens of social justice movements, including, but not limited to, race, gender, class, immigration, and disability. We envision a world in which all people work toward and experience the joy of liberation.”

Currently in its early stages of development, stay tuned for inaugural programming and exhibitions. Follow The American LGBTQ+ Museum on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
