Speaking to our featured image (above), between 1940 and 1959, four now legendary artists were introduced to American audiences by the Galerie St. Etienne: Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, and Anna Mary Robertson (“Grandma”) Moses. Iconic work from these artists will comprise the gallery’s exhibition at the Winter Show and include a portrait by Egon Schiele of his sister Gerti, who would go on to model professionally. She can be seen in his Portrait of a Woman in an Orange Hat, 1910. Schiele’s wife, Edith Harms, a proper bourgeois young lady, found it hard to adjust to her husband’s bohemian ways. A 1915 portrait, Woman Holding Flower (Edith Schiele), evokes the subject’s wistful sadness, Gustav Klimt’s Standing Female Nude with Hand Resting on Hip, Facing Left 1916-17, and a number of snow scenes by Grandma Moses will be on view. The Winter Show will kick-off the gallery’s 80th anniversary year. Visit Galerie St. Etienne at Booth D7.
All revenues from the Fair’s general admissions and the net proceeds from the Opening Night Party and other events go to East Side House Settlement.
The Winter Show will run from January 17 to January 27 at Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue, NYC
